A Knit-and-Purl Stitch That Looks Like Expert Work + Video

If you love stitch patterns that look advanced but only use the basics (knit and purl), today’s tutorial is for you.

This gorgeous texture is created with nothing more than knit and purl, yet the result looks like something straight out of an expert knitter’s repertoire.

Chunky, dimensional, and super cozy — it’s perfect for blankets, scarves, cowls, sweaters, or anytime you want that “faux cable” look without the hassle of actual cables.

Don’t let the texture fool you — this stitch is much easier than it looks. The repeat is 12 rows, but you only “think” on Rows 1 and 7. After Row 1, the next 5 rows are simply knit the knits, purl the purls. Same thing after Row 7. Two action rows, that’s it. The rest practically knits itself.

And yes… There’s a step-by-step video so you can follow along easily.

Let’s get started!

Why This Knit and Purl Stitch Works for Everything

  1. Cable look, but without the effort 😉
  2. Thick, dimensional texture
  3. Works for any project: blankets, scarves, infinite cowls, hats, sweaters, cardigans… you name it!
  4. It’s not identical on both sides, but the wrong side is pretty too, so to me, it’s a reversible knitting pattern

Materials

For this swatch I used:

How to Knit This Faux Cable Texture With Knit and Purl Stitches Only!

Pattern Notes

  • Best in chunky or worsted yarn
  • Great stitch definition
  • The even rows form the right side of the work
  • I’ll give you the trick for perfect edges!

Stitch Multiple

CO multiples of 6 + 2 + 2 (edge/selvedge sts). For example: 6 * 3 = 18 + 2 = 20 + 2 = 22 sts.

Knit and Purl Stitch Pattern Instructions

Rows 1-3-5 (WS): wyif sl1pw (edge), wyib *K2, P4*. Repeat from * to *, to last 3 sts, K2, K1 (edge)

Rows 2-4-6 (RS): wyif sl1pw (edge), P2, *K4, P2*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Rows 7-9-11 (WS): wyif sl1pw, *P3, K2, P1*. Repeat from * to *, to last 3 sts, P2, K1 (edge).

These 12 rows create the pattern. Repeat then until the desired length is reached.

When finished, BO purlwise after row 12 (WS).

Frequently Asked Questions

Is this knit and purl stitch reversible?

No, but the wrong side is tidy and usable.

Does it curl?

It doesn’t, this is why it’s ideal for scarves, blankets, and any other garment that should stay flat. If you’re thinking of adding an edge, the Seed stitch will work nicely.

Good for beginners?

Yes! If you can knit and purl, you can do this.
