How to Knit the No-Purling Hurdle Stitch + Video
In this tutorial, youโll learn how to knit the No-Purling Hurdle Stitch in 1 and 2 colors.
I always thought that there was only one Hurdle Stitch, and I shared it with you a while ago.
Although that version is pretty popular (itโs a classic in the knitting world), itโs a knit + purl pattern.
Recently, I came across this variant, for those moments when we donโt want to purl ๐
Itโs a four-row repeat pattern, easy to knit, and you can mix 2 colors of your preference, or decide to make it in just one color.
The No-Purling Hurdle Stitch has a lovely texture to it (kind of vintage), and it doesnโt curl.
However, I wouldnโt say itโs reversible.
Before I forget, Iโd like to mention that for this pattern itโs better to go up a needle size, to avoid a too-tight fabric.
For example, if the manufacturer suggests on the label to use US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles for that specific yarn, work with US 9 (5.5 mm) instead.
Having said that, grab your needles, and some yarn, and letโs get started ๐
I knitted this swatch with 100% wool yarn (worsted weight, smooth, and beginners-friendly) #ad
With Us 9 (5.5 mm) bamboo needles (double pointed, smooth, perfect for swatching and small projects) #ad

Notes Before Starting:
Weโll start with a setup row or row โ0โ. It will be made just once.
There are no edge/selvage stitches included.
Always slip the stitches knitwise (it will create a twisted stitch on the next row on purpose).

CO multiples of 4 + 3. For example: 4 * 5 = 20 + 3 = 23 stitches.
Setup Row (WS): With CA, K across
Row 1 (RS): With CB, K3, *sl1kw, K3*. Repeat from * to *, to end
Row 2: With CB, K3, *wyif sl1kw, wyib K3*. Repeat from * to *, to end
Row 3: With CA, K1, *sl1kw, K3*. Repeat from * to *, to last 2 st, ending with wyif sl1kw, wyib K1
Row 4: With CA, K1, *wyif sl1kw, wyib K3*. Repeat from * to *, to last 2 st, ending with wyif sl1kw, wyib K1.
The last 4 rows create the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.
When finished, with CA, BO knitwise after row 4 (RS).
