How to knit the Horizontal Double Chain stitch pattern

Today, I’m sharing how to knit the Horizontal Double Chain stitch, a lovely pattern.

It has a rich texture to it; the design forms embossed horizontal chains throughout the fabric, divided by sections of Stockinette stitch.

The fact is that it’s fun and quick to knit because it has a short repeat, so you’ll memorize it pretty quickly.

In addition, it’s a six-row repeat pattern, three of which are plain knit and purl rows (“resting rows”).

Actually, the “real action” takes place in three rows, but not to worry, there are only 2 steps to be done.

Although the wrong side of the work forms sections of Reverse Stockinette and gentler chains, I don’t think it’s a reversible pattern.

Unfortunately, the sides look a bit irregular, plus they tend to bend at the bottom and at the top.

However,  this wouldn’t stop me to use it for a scarf, a cowl, a blanket, or any other garment that should stay flat.

The good news is that you can fix this issue by adding a nice edge on each side of the project 😉

So, my little Woolly, let’s knit a lovely swatch together.

Grab your needles, and some yarn, and… action!

Abbreviations

CO: Cast on

st: Stitch

RS: Right side of the work

K: Knit

P: Purl

sl1pw: Slip one stitch purlwise (as if to purl)

K2togtbl: Knit two stitches together through the back loop

BO: Bind off

WS: Wrong side of the work

N.B:

First of all, we’ll start with a setup row, which will be made at the beginning and doesn’t form part of the pattern.

Second, the odd rows form the right side of the work.

Finally, the edge (selvage) stitches (the first and the last) will be knitted on every odd row, and purled on every even row.

This swatch was made out of a colorful blend of 80% Merino wool yarn and 20% Nylon (hand dyed, super soft, and machine washable) using 2 strands #ad

CO an even number of st (it will include the edge or selvage st).

Setup row (WS): P across

Rows 1 and 5 (RS): K across

Row 2: P1 (edge), *insert the needle after the second stitch from the left-hand needle, K1, k2togtbl (the first two stitches)*. Repeat from * to *, to last st, P1 (edge)

Row 3: K1 (edge), *insert the needle after the second stitch from the left-hand needle, K1, k2togtbl (the first two stitches)*. Repeat from * to *, to last st, K1 (edge)

Row 4: P1 (edge), *K1, sl1pw*. Repeat from * to *, to last st, P1 (edge)

Row 6: P across

These last six rows create the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.

When finished, BO knitwise after row 6 (RS).
