How to knit the Double Garter stitch (reversible)
Today, I’m sharing how to knit a lovely pattern: The Double Garter stitch.
It’s a four-row repeat pattern, full of texture, perfect for baby stuff, blankets, and accessories, such as scarves, shawls, hats, and infinite cowls.
In fact, it reminds me of the Chain stitch we practiced a while ago (another cute pattern).
However, if you’re looking to knit a sweater (or a cardigan), the Double Garter stitch is also a nice option.
In addition, it’s a reversible pattern!
Although both sides are different, they look pretty 😉
Finally, and before I forget, I’d suggest using a larger needle size (just one size up than what you’d normally use with the yarn chosen).
Enough chatting!
Grab your needles and some yarn, and let’s knit a lovely swatch 🙂
Abbreviations
CO: Cast on
st: Stitch
RS: Right side of the work
K: Knit
P: Purl
sl2pw: Slip two stitches as if to purl (purlwise)
k2tog: Knit two stitches together
BO: Bind off
This swatch was made out of 35% Superfine Alpaca and 65% Highland Wool yarn #ad
With my favorite bamboo needles (double point) US 8 size (5 mm) #ad

N.B:
The odd rows form the right side of the work.
The edge/selvage stitches (the first and the last) will be knitted on every odd row, and purled on every even row.
We’ll start with two setup rows, worked in Garter stitch. They will be made only once, at the beginning of the pattern.

CO an even number of st (it will include 2 edge stitches).
Setup rows:
Row 1: K across
Row 2: K across
Rows that create the pattern:
1º row (RS): K1 (edge), *K1 inserting the needle between the next two stitches in the row below, give it a twist, put it back onto the left-hand needle, sl2pw*. Repeat from * to *, to last st, ending with K1 (edge)
2º row (RS): P1, *k2tog*. Repeat from * to *, to last st, ending with P1 (edge)
3º row: K across
4º row: P across
These last four rows create the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.
When finished, BO knitwise, after row 4 (RS).
