How to knit easy Baby – Toddler Shoes using straight needles
In today’s tutorial, you’ll learn how to knit adorable little shoes (or booties, also called Mary Janes) for babies and toddlers, using straight needles, not circulars.
You´ll remember another pair of Baby Booties for absolute beginners, that we made a long time ago, I think these might be even cuter…
Its so easy, the only techniques required are: Garter stitch, a simple yet discrete increase technique, and a decrease technique so it´s just not complicated at all, at all.
This Baby-Toddler Shoes pattern comes in four sizes: From 0-6 months, from 6-12 months, from 12-18 months, and from 18-24 months.
For the cutest project in the world ever, you’ll need:
Materials
2 x US 6 (4 mm) knitting needles
50 gr of cotton yarn (or Merino wool) Nº 4 (or Worsted) #ad
2 buttons (1 cm diameter)
Tapestry needle, scissors, and measurement tape or rule.

Measurements (foot length)
Size 0 – 6 months: 3.75 in (9.5 cm)
Size 6 – 12 months: 3.9 in (10 cm)
Size 12 – 18 months: 4.3 in (11 cm)
Size 18 – 24 months: 4.9 in (12.5 cm)
Gauge
A 4 x 4 in square (10 x 10 cm) knitted in Garter stitch using the needles and the yarn mentioned above, equals 20 st and 38 rows.
Abbreviations
CO: Cast on
st: Stich
K: Knit
P: Purl
inc: Increase one stitch using this technique
k2tog: Knit two stitches together
sd: Simple decrease. Slip 1 stitch knitwise (pass the stitch onto the right-hand needle as if to knit, knit the next stitch, and pass the slipped stitch over the last one.
yo: Yarn over (or bring the yarn forward)
BO: Bind off
RS: Right side of the work
WS: Wrong side of the work
Baby – Toddler Shoes knitting pattern
CO 26 (28, 30, 36) st.
Increase section
1º, 3º and 5º rows: K across
2º row: [K1, inc, K11 (12, 13, 16), inc, K1] twice. There are 30 (32, 34, 40) st in total.
4º row: *K2, inc, K11 (12, 13, 16), inc, K2* inc. Repeat from * to * once more. There are 35 (37, 39, 45) st in total.
6º row: K3, inc, K11 (12, 13, 16), inc, K2, inc, K3, inc, K2, inc, K11 (12, 13, 16), inc, K3. There ate 41 (43, 45, 51) st.
Work 8 (8, 10, 12) rows in Garter stitch.
Decrease section
Next row: K11 (13, 15, 16), sd 4 (4, 3, 4) times, K3 (1, 3, 3), k2tog 4 (4, 3, 4) times, K11 (13, 15, 16). There are 33 (35, 39, 43) st.
Next row: K across
Next row: BO 33 (35, 39, 43) st knitwise.
Seaming
Fold the rectangle in half, and join both sides starting on the heel (left upper corner).
Knit the second shoe and repeat the process to join the sides.
Left Shoe Strap
Facing the RS, pick up and K the 5 (5, 7, 9) central st from the ankle, and work 2 rows in Garter st.
CO 6 (8, 8, 9) st, K across, and CO 12 (12, 12, 14) st. 1
Next row: K across
Buttonhole row: K across to last 3 st, ending with yo, sd, K1.
Next row: BO knitwise.
Right Shoe Strap
Facing the RS, pick up and K the 5 (5, 7, 9) central st from the ankle, and work 2 rows in Garter st.
When you get to the end of the row, CO 12 (12, 12, 14) st, K across, and CO 6 (8, 8, 9) st. There are 23 (25, 27, 32) st.
Next row: K across
Buttonhole row: K1, k2tog, yo, K to end.
Next row: BO knitwise.
Now, sew up the buttons, and your Baby – Toddler Shoes are finished!
