How to knit the Hearts Lace stitch (also for non-experts)

Today, you’ll learn how to knit the Hearts Lace stitch.

I know, I know, St. Valentine’s Day was months ago, but love is in the air <3

It’s a lovely openwork pattern, perfect for a seasonal scarf, sweater, or wrap, and the good news is that you don’t need to be an expert to succeed at it!

Actually, the Hearts Lace stitch is one of those patterns that look complicated, but once you try it, you’ll start feeling more and more confident.

The techniques required are simple decreases and yarnovers, yet the last row features two different double decreases.

As with many other lace patterns, it tends to bend on the sides, so if you’re knitting a garment that should stay completely flat, don’t forget to add a nice edge on each side of the piece.

A nice edge stitch pattern should not curl, so think of the Seed stitch, Irish Moss stitch, Bumpy stitch, Garter stitch, etc.

Finally, don’t forget to use pointy needles, and to block your work once it’s finished.

Abbreviations

CO: Cast on

st: Stitch

RS: Right side

K: Knit

P: Purl

yo: Yarn over

k2tog: Simple right-leaning decrease. Knit two stitches together

k3tog: Double right-leaning decrease. Knit three stitches together

sd: Simple left-leaning decrease. Slip one stitch knitwise, knit the next, and pass the slipped stitch over

dd: Double left-leaning decrease. Slip one stitch knitwise, knit two stitches together, and pass the slipped stitch over

WS: Wrong side

BO: Bind off

N.B.:

The even rows form the right side of the work.

There are no edge or selvage stitches included, if you like to have them, add two stitches to the stitch count.

CO multiples of 11; i.e.: 11 * 2 = 22 stitches

1º and every odd row (WS): P across

Row 2 : *K4, k2tog, yo, K5*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Row 4: *K3, k2tog, yo, K1, yo, sd, K3*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Row 6: *K2, k2tog, yo, K3, yo, sd, K2*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Row 8: *K1, k2tog, yo, K5, yo, sd, K1*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Row 10: *k2tog, yo, K2, k2tog, yo, K3, yo, sd*. Repeat from * to *, to end

Row 12: *K2, yo, dd, yo, K1, yo, k3tog, yo, K2*. Repeat from * to *, to end.

These twelve rows create the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.

When finished, BO purlwise after row 12 (WS).
