How to knit the Mermaid stitch pattern: Perfect for blankets, blankies, binkies etc…
In this tutorial, you’ll learn the Mermaid knitting stitch pattern: A charming stitch (it has a rich nubbly texture to it, similar to another old favorite the Edelweiss stitch which we practiced some time ago), extraordinary as well as easy peasy lemon squeezy.
I think it’s the perfect stitch for a bag, a cushion or a blanket… something large enough to appreciate the entire pattern with both your eyes and your hands.
What’s more, if you prefer a scarf, please don’t forget to include a nice edge on each side of the piece, trust me it really makes a difference.
The Mermaid knitting stitch is a 12 row-repeat pattern, however, the good news is:
All even rows are purl to end
Rows 1 and 3, and then 7 and 9 are exactly the same.
Therefore, there is very little to memorize! Yay!
Abbreviations
CO: Cast on
RS: Right side of the work
K: Knit
P: Purl
k3tog: Knit three stitches together
BO: Bind off
N.B.: We’ll start knitting a set up row, or “0 row”, how I like to call it. This row will be done just once, it won’t be repeated again.
How to knit the Mermaid stitch pattern
CO multiples 4 + 3, i.e.: 4 * 3 = 12 + 3 = 15 stitches.
Set up row (row 0): P across
1º and 3º rows: K2 *bring the yarn forward, slip 3 stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back, K1*. Repeat from * to * to last st, K1.
2º and every even row: P across.
5º row: K3 *k3tog using the 2 strands or bars from the previous rows, along with the next st, K3*. Repeat from * to * to end.
7º and 9º rows: K3 *K1, *bring the yarn forward, slip 3 stitches purlwise, bring the yarn to the back*. Repeat from * to * to last 4 st, K4.
11º row: K2 *K3, k3tog using the 2 strands or bars from the previous rows, along with the next st*. Repeat from * to * to last 2 st, K2.
12º row: P across.
These last 12 rows form the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.
When finished, BO purlwise after a row 11.
