How to knit the Heart stitch pattern (2 rows only!)
Today, I’m sharing how to knit the Heart stitch, a two-row repeat pattern, super easy to do, and great for beginners.
Actually, it’s made out of two steps, and the only techniques required are the knit stitch (regular and through the back loop), and the purl stitch.
Besides, the right side of the Heart stitch looks like the Stockinette stitch, but it lays flat… YAY!
On the contrary, the wrong side looks like the 1×1 Rib stitch, so I’d say it’s a reversible pattern, perfect for scarves and infinite cowls, among other projects.
However, there’s a peculiarity about this stitch you need to know before we start:
In order to create the little “hearts”, we’ll use two different needles: One two sizes smaller than the other #ad

The odd rows will be worked using the smaller needle; for the even rows, we’ll use the larger one.
For example: I knitted my swatch with 100% cotton yarn (worsted weight or medium), ideal for a 5 mm (US 8 size) needle. This was my smaller needle.
So I chose a 7 mm (US 10.5 size approx.) as my larger needle.
The key is that the smaller needle should be the same size recommended for the yarn you’re using; the larger one, two sizes larger.
Last but not least, put the second needle of the same size away from you! Leave just one small needle and one large needle close to your working yarn.
Believe me, if you don’t, you could end up knitting with both needles of the same size 😉
Having said that, it’s time to knit!
Grab your needles and some yarn, and let’s get busy…
Abbreviations
CO: Cast on
st: Stitch
RS: Right side of the work
K: Knit
P: Purl
k1tbl: Knit one stitch through the back loop
BO: Bind off
WS: Wrong side of the work
N.B:
The odd rows form the right side of the work.
The edge/selvage stitches (the first and the last) will be knitted on every odd row, and purled on every even row.
How to knit the Heart stitch (two rows only!)
Using the larger needle, CO an odd number of st.
Row 1 (and every odd row – RS): With the smaller needle, K1 (edge), *P1, k1tbl*. Repeat from * to *, to last 2 st, ending with P1, K1 (edge)
Row 2 (and every even row): With the larger needle, P1 (edge), *k1tbl, P1*. Repeat from * to *, to last 2 st, ending with k1tbl, P1 (edge).
These two rows create the pattern. Repeat them until the desired length is reached.
When finished, BO working each stitch as it presents after row 1 (WS).
This is the other side of the work:
