How to Knit a Chunky Scarf: Reversible Rope Cables + Video
In this tutorial, you’ll learn how to knit a chunky scarf in the Reversible Rope stitch, since Aran patterns are so lit this season, and this scarf is a great winter accessory!
This pattern is part of the Cable Stitch Patterns collection, where you’ll find classic, reversible, and distinctive cable designs.
Although we have practiced one reversible cable stitch (The Fuchsia Flower stitch), normally, cable knitting patterns are not reversible… What a pity! I think that such beautiful work should be able to look great on both sides, especially in a scarf!
This is why this stitch is special and almost unique, looks great on a scarf, blanket, and also, on an infinity cowl.
You can knit this amazing chunky scarf in two different gauges: Using US 19 (15 mm) needles and super bulky wool yarn (number 6), or using US 8 (5 mm) needles and DK (number 3) wool yarn.
The only difference is the number of stitches to cast on (you’ll find the number of stitches for the slim scarf in parenthesis).
Measurements of the Finished Chunky Scarf (once blocked)
Wide: 10.5 in (27 cm)
Long: 67 in (170 cm) or more, if you like it longer, but no less than 59 in (150 cm).
Don’t Forget to Block Your Chunky Scarf:
If you don’t know how to block your knitting, or even what does it mean, or you’re not used to it, I suggest you always do it!
This technique works on every piece of knitting and improves the shape and the look of your garments (but first please read the manufacturer recommendations shown on the label of the yarn).

Gauge (knitted in Reversible Rope stitch)
Using US 19 (15 mm) needles and nº 6 wool yarn: 9 stitches equals 4 in (10 cm)
Using US 8 (5 mm) needles and nº 3 wool yarn: 30 stitches equals 4 in (10 cm)
Materials
For the chunky scarf:
3 skeins (600 gr.) of wool yarn for US 17 (12 mm) needles. I used Crazy Sexy Wool #ad
And, of course, the interchangeable cable #ad
However, if you prefer to knit with straight needles…
For the finer scarf:
US 8 (5 mm) knitting needles #ad
For both scarves:
Scissors
Stitch holder #ad
or Cable needle #ad
Tapestry needle #ad
Blocking board #ad
Measurement tape or rule

CO: Cast on
st: St
k: Knit
p: Purl
cn: Stitch holder or cable needle
BO: Bind off
Chunky Scarf Knitting Pattern
CO 24 st (80 st). (The Reversible Rope stitch needs multiples of 8 + 4 + 4 st).
1º row: K2, *P4, K4*. Repeat from * to *, until last 6 st, P4, K2.
2º and 4º rows: K2, *K4, P4*. Repeat from * to *, until last 6 st, K6.
3º row: K2, *P4, pass 2 st to cn and hold in back, K2, K2 (from cn)*. Repeat from * to *, until last 6 st, P4, K2.
5º row: K2, *pass 2 st to cn and hold in front, P2, P2 (from cn), K4*. Repeat from * to *, until last 6 st, pass 2 st to cn and hold in front, P2, P2 (from cn), K2.
6º row: As 2º and 4º rows.
After knitting these 6 rows, repeat rows 3º to 6º only, until the piece measures almost 67 in (170 cm), ending with a 4º row. (Please be careful and leave enough yarn to work one more row and then the BO row).
BO in pattern (work every stitch as it presents).
Weave in the ends, block your garment, and enjoy your new scarf!
