How to knit a kid’s Cardigan (0-24 months old)

Share via: Facebook Twitter Email LinkedIn Copy Link More An adorable knitting pattern ideal for beginners: Learn to knit a Kid’s Cardigan, step by step.  Knitted flat, the pattern comes in 3 sizes and it’s easy to modify (our last Cardi, was knitted in the round, and comes in only one size). We start with a Garter stitch edge (for every one of the five pieces: Sleeves, back, right and left front), followed by the textured Checkerboard stitch pattern. If you are just starting to knit, you could also knit the whole Cardi in Garter stitch, it will be our little secret! Let’s get started… Materials 1 x 4 mm (US 6) knitting needles #ad Superwash Merino Wool (number 4, Medium, Aran or Worsted weight): Size 0-2 months: 135gr Size 12 months: 250 gr Size 24 months: 360 gr 1 wooden button #ad Scissors #ad Yarning needle #ad Measuring tape #ad Abbreviations st.: stitches K: Knit P: Purl CO: Cast on BO: Bind off RS: Right side of the work WS: Wrong side of the work Gauge: 10 cm/4 in. in Checkerboard st. = 23 st. and 34 rows. Measurements of the finished piece/Size 0-2 months: 19 cm/7.5 in wide (half of the hip) and 19 cm/7.5 in (total length). 12 months: 26.5 cm/10.4 in wide (half of the hip) and 24 cm/9.45 in (total length). 24 months: 32 cm/12.6 in wide (half of the hip) and 30,5 cm/11.81 in (total length). How to knit a Kid’s Cardigan (for beginners) Notes before starting: Knit the selvedge st. (1º and last one) in every row. As the size increase, increase the Garter st. edge, that explains why there are less Checkerboard sections in some sizes. Back CO 40 (60-72) p + 2 selvedge st = 42 (62-74) st in total. Knit 5 (9-15) rows in Garter st. Checkerboard stitch pattern Every section has squares of 4 st and 6 rows. First section: 1º Row: K1 (edge) *K4, P4*. Repeat from * to * ending with K1 (edge). Repeat this row 5 more times, to complete 6 rows. Second section 7º Row: K1 (edge) *P4, K4*. Repeat from * to * ending with K1 (edge). Repeat this row 5 more times, to complete 6 rows.  Continue knitting from 1º row again, until you have 9 (8-9) sections in total. On the last row of the last section, BO in pattern. Sleeves CO 32 (52-64) st + 2 selvedge st. = 34 (54-66) st. in total. Knit 11 (17-23)rows in Garter st. Knit 8 (6-6) sections in Checkerboard st. ending with a 5º row.   On the last row of the last section, BO in pattern. Right Front CO 20 (30-36) st + 2 selvedge st. = 22 (32-38) st. in total. Knit 5 (9-15) rows in Garter st. Knit 7 (6-7) sections plus 2 more rows of the following section. Buttonhole (RS): On next row, knit 3 st and bind off 4 st. Finish the row maintaining the pattern. On next row, knit until the button hole is reached, cast on 4 st, and finish the row knitting 2 st. Complete this section knitting the following 2 rows as they present. Neckline (RS): BO 5 (6-7) st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row. BO 2 (4-4) st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row. BO 1 (2-2) p st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row. 2 years old size only: BO 1 more st. and finish the row knitting in pattern. Shoulder: On next row, BO all remaining st. Left Front CO 20 (30-36) st + 2 selvedge st. = 22 (32-38) st. in total. Knit 5 (9-15) rows in Garter st. Knit 7 (6-7) sections plus 2 more rows of the following section. Neckline (WS): BO 5 (6-7) st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row. BO 2 (4-4) st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row. BO 1 (2-2) p st in pattern and finish the row knitting the st as they present. Knit the next row.  2 years old size only: BO 1 more st. and finish the row knitting in pattern. Shoulder: On next row, BO all remaining st. Sewing time : ( ! First, join the shoulders (front and back), then, the sleeves to the front and back.
